Rocky Neck Water Quality
To know whether Rocky Neck's beach is safe for swimming, check DEEP's Swimming Area Water Quality Report, which DEEP updates weekly from Memorial Day to Labor Day for Rocky Neck and its other designated swimming areas. The swimming area is West Beach only. When a sample shows high bacteria, the swimming area can be closed until a later sample is clean; the swimming area has been closed for a weekend for exactly that reason.

Why a Beach Closes
Closures follow a high bacteria sample and last until a later sample is clean. DEEP's swimming page also warns that murky water can be a blue-green algae bloom and links its guidance on what to do if you see one. If the water looks wrong, stay out and check the report.
West Beach vs East Beach
Testing and swimming apply to West Beach, the designated swimming area on DEEP's map. East Beach, toward the mouth of Bride Brook, is marked no swimming whatever the water quality. Beach guide.
The Marsh Next Door
Bride Brook drains an 82-acre salt marsh into the Sound beside East Beach. Save the Sound says the 2010 replacement of the brook's old culverts restored tidal flow and improved water quality in the marsh, and The Nature Conservancy's current restoration planning aims to improve it further. Other Places to Swim Nearby
If the swimming area is closed, East Lyme's town beaches (McCook Point, Hole-in-the-Wall and Niantic Bay Beach) are a few miles east, with their own lifeguards in summer and a town pass required. They are tested separately. East Lyme beaches.
